Saying no Volatile at workplace- What do you think wrong or right?

A very common question arises in front of employees and that the toughest time for any employee. That thing to do is say no to your boss. In most of the cases, you are expected to say yes to all the things whatever you are asked to do. However, in many cases it is okay or genuine to say no. In fact, sometimes it is a very good idea and the proper thing to say is no. Saying yes to all the things asked you to do cement your reputation and it leads you to get more responsibilities. Saying no, in the right way at the right time is required and it can also lead to remain protected from burnout and overload. Same in the case of boss too. Suppose If you are the boss and sometimes you have to say no to an employee for any unworkable idea clearly you can say no for that idea. It’s the right time no, there are various times in life when it’s is okay to say no:

  1. The case may be like the task falls not in not your actual responsibilities. You should keep a clear track of what is expected and be ready to turn down a task that does not fit in the targets or aims. There are more probable chances that these all the things will distract you from the things you need to be actually doing.
  2. Suppose it may be the case that you are not qualified or the best qualified to complete the given task. This often comes to light when a coworker generally asks for your help. In some cases there may be another person in the office who can do much better jobs.
  3. You always find yourself responding to all the messages and all the emails routinely whenever at your home or when off the clock. But this is unfortunate, in general some employers expect to respond back like this kind of 24/7 availability, but it is in general bad for your mental health, your social life, and your family too.
  4. The deadline is generally if you will pay attention you will find is set like unrealistic, moreover also when if it is also unnecessary. But the things could be different, learning to prioritize is important, but in general some people will ask always for very tight deadlines and on low priority tasks.
  5. The various ways you are asked to do the task those are ineffective, often because these are the ways by which these are always done.
  6. The suggested idea which has already been demonstrated not to work, perhaps also before the person suggesting it also joined the team.
  7. The meetings you have been asked to go and attend to can be called as complete wastage of time. There is also a survey review that is survey by the Harvard Business found that 65% of senior managers review is that meetings interfered generally with the work and 71% said that they were unproductive and that is inefficient.
  8. In general you are already swamped by other tasks. So automatically there is a situation comes to say “no”.

So, how to no effectively without becoming what is known as a naysayer? Here are  few tips:

  1. Being honest that is one important thing. Not to make fake excuses. If you are saying no for the reason that you are saying no is because you are asked to do something you are bad at, admit it.
  2. Suggesting an alternative is better, If someone is trying to distract you or pull you away from your desk for a meeting it’s better to ask if they can go over it in email, or also you can ask to see the agenda, which at least will clear the things like somebody has thought about it and what the meeting is about. If you are ready to say no because the way things are going to be done is inefficient, get ready and present a suggestion with to improve them. If here comes to your mind that somebody else is better qualified, say so, or it’s better yet to contact that person by yourself.
  3. If there is a reason to say no because in general you are swamped or even you are trying to preserve all your work-life balance, say so and also say what you are doing instead of that. If the new project is genuinely important, then may be able to take something else off of your desk or also can push it to the backburner in general.

As humans, we are presumed that we will say yes to all the things. Saying No is something like bad thing and about someone’s personality. But the clarity is there the focus is there Whenever there is a power dynamic involved, we are even more inclined to agree, we easily say yes to all first and then think about it later. Learning to assess whether you should say yes when you say yes and when no and how to say no graciously, is an important skill to learn in work and in practical life in general.
